5 days/20 hours per week

Busy professional kitchen requires hard-working kitchen assistants/ pot washer. Basic food preparation, keep the kitchen, equipment clean and tidy, washing up, cleaning kitchen surfaces, deep cleans, rubbish removal.

Working under the head chef, all training will be given on the job

This is physical work and you will be on your feet at all times. Ability to work hard and at times under pressure. This is an important role so we need someone with a great willing attitude. Good personal hygiene

20 hours a week over 5 days – day time

We are a growing business so there may be opportunities for career progression

Must be able to take instructions, take pride, work as part of a team and to use their initiative appropriately

Gloucestershire College is inviting young people and their parents in to its Gloucester Campus this March to learn about apprenticeships and meet the employers looking to recruit them.

The Apprenticeship Information Evening – Gloucester Campus on Wednesday 22 March 2017, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm

Guests to the Apprenticeship Information Evening will get the chance to explore the different types of apprenticeships available through the College, including degree-level apprenticeships. They’ll also have the opportunity to visit six industry zones, where they can speak directly to the Gloucestershire businesses who will be recruiting apprentices in the coming year and find out about the roles on offer. Prospective apprentices can even apply for live vacancies on the night.

The apprenticeship zones are:

  • Construction and Motor Vehicle
  • Engineering
  • Health, Social Care and Early Years
  • Catering and Hospitality
  • Professional Services and Creative Industries
  • Retail

Companies from around the county will be represented at each of the zones; amongst them will be construction employers: Clarkson Evans, EG Carter and Complete Utilities; engineering firms: Spirax Serco, Poeton and Leoni; financial businesses: Hazlewoods and St James Place; as well as caterers, The Patisserie Box.

The GC Apprenticeships Team will be on-hand on the night to explain the different levels of apprenticeships and qualifications you can achieve as an apprentice. They can also offer insight into entry requirements, typical wages and the career paths an apprenticeship can lead to.

Current apprentices will be sharing their experiences in their current roles and answering questions about life as an apprentice.

Julie Tegg, Head of Work Based Training at Gloucestershire College, said: “Myself and my team of apprenticeship experts are very excited for the Apprenticeship Information Evening, which will provide a real insight into how apprentices work and the wide range of opportunities with local employers.”

“We will be joined by employers from a diverse range of industries at our six apprenticeship zones, including those who currently train GC apprentices and those who will be hiring an apprentice for the first time; all of which will be looking to take on new apprentices in the next year.

“The event will give prospective apprentices the chance to talk face-to-face to employers for a real insight into what they are looking for, and even apply for current vacancies in person.”

We are hiring 3 Pastry Chef Apprentices now!Our wholesale business- The Patisserie Box, are looking to hire 3 Pastry Chef Apprentices now.

This is an amazing opportunity to train under Xavier Pelloux who with 20 years’ experience started his own career as an apprentice and Trained & Qualified as a Pastry Chef in Switzerland.

Since moving to England he has worked in some of London’s leading kitchen from Maison Blanc,The Ivy Restaurant, Harrods Knightsbridge and the Hilton, Park Lane. Founder and Director of The Patisserie Box.

Xavier is an experienced Pastry Chef and Chocolatier. Who creates desserts for all occasions. He also specialises in Croquembouche.

As an apprentice Pastry Chef, you will work with Xavier to learn your trade and give you a great foundation to start your career.

Full Pastry Chef Apprentice description (full vacancy specification)

Work within a small team of Pastry Chefs, to train in all aspects of being a Pastry Chef, creating a whole range of desserts from scratch. Learning the basics up to the finished products. You would be expected to work to extremely high food safety standard and ensure that the work area was kept clean and that you worked in a clean and hygienic manner always.

Experience isn’t as important as a real passion and interest in the role and willingness to learn. Hard worker essential and commitment to your work and the company.

Working Week
(i.e. Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, 1 hour for lunch) 37.5 hours 8am -4pm Monday to Friday (times may vary).

Pastry Chef Apprentice Skills required

Good communication skills. Attention to detail-creative-organised-the ability to follow a recipe. Hard worker and team player.

A keen interest in pastry, cakes, baking and desserts. Good communication skills.  Someone who enjoys being part of a team, who thrives in a busy environment, has a willingness to learn a wide range of new skills and can embrace and adapt to a varied working day/week.

Qualifications required: GCSE maths and English A-C or Functional skills at level 2

A lot is expected of you within this kitchen, hard work, commitment, sometimes shift/hours of work changing at short notice. A positive attitude always.

Important Other Information

20 days paid holiday a year plus bank holidays. Most working weeks are Monday to Friday, days, straight shifts. Bank holidays are usually not worked, but can occur on occasion.

Such is Xavier Pelloux at the Contemporary Cake Design devotion’s to producing the finest pastries and cakes that he refuses to take short cuts that might make his life easier.

And while this may add a few extra hours to the processes involved in making his Continental style treats, he says the difference in the taste, texture and appearance is well worth going the extra mile.

Leckhampton based Contemporary Cake Designs began supplying sea salt caramel tarts, chocolate tarts, lemon tarts, raspberry eclairs, fraisier cakes, opera cakes, colourful macaroons  and a wide range of other goodies to the motorway services station.

Working as a pastry chef and chocolatier is a way of life for Xavier, 38, who began learning his trade when he was a teenager.

By 18 he had an impressive range of qualifications and left his native Switzerland to travel the world, working in New York and some of the UK’s most prestigious restaurants and shops, including Maison Blanc, The Ivy, The Hilton in Park Lane and Harrods. In fact he was working in the famous Knightsbridge store when he met his wife-to-be, Barbara, known as Bee, who worked in the decorated cakes department.

Xavier’s training equipped him to execute every aspect of the pâtissier’s art, including creating stunning croquembouches and exquisite wedding cakes, all of which are finished to incredibly high standards.

Xavier’s career began at a bakery/pastry shop around the corner from his parents in Switzerland.

“My mum used to take me there as a child and I loved the strawberry ice creams they served,” he says.
“I started my apprenticeship at 14: school had never really appealed to me. I had the basics but it was when I started a holiday job at my local bakery that things started to make sense.

“Fourteen was an unusually young age to be apprenticed and so I began with a pre-apprenticeship with the support of my parents. This meant that I was a fully qualified as a pastry chef before I was 18.

“Working abroad allowed me to develop my skills and work with some of the best people and finest ingredients.”

Xavier and Bee moved to Gloucestershire in 2005 to set up their own business specialising in wedding cakes, for which they created a kitchen that met their exacting standards.

“We built the kitchen from scratch; people thought we were nuts,” laughs Xavier. “I did the painting and tiling myself; our child had barely been born.”

To a certain we are a victim of our own success as we are recieiving a growing number of requests for wedding, christening and bespoke cake creations consultations.

The bad news is that as a result in future we will be charging a £50 consultation fee for all of our cake designs and creations.

The good news is that these fees will be 100% fully deducatable in your deposit payment when you commission us to create a cake for you.
